Third-party protection is one of the most demanding domains in real-world self-defence. Unlike personal self-defence, the focus is not solely on protecting yourself, but on safeguarding another person who may be vulnerable, frightened, or unable to respond effectively.
This domain applies to everyday situations involving children, family members, friends, or colleagues, as well as professional contexts such as healthcare, education, or support services. In all cases, the defender carries an added layer of responsibility that significantly affects decision-making.
A core principle of third-party protection is movement and extraction. Rather than engaging in prolonged confrontation, the priority is to position yourself between the threat and the person you are protecting, then move them toward safety as efficiently as possible. Fighting is a last resort, used only to create space or break contact.
Positioning is critical. The defender must manage distance, angles, and awareness while also controlling the movement of the third party. This often means guiding, pulling, pushing, or shielding another person while responding to a dynamic and unpredictable threat.
Another defining challenge is behavioural management. The person being protected may freeze, panic, resist movement, or act unpredictably. Krav Maga training addresses this by developing clear communication, assertive direction, and physical positioning that supports safe movement under stress.
Third-party protection also carries significant legal and ethical considerations. Responses must be proportionate, appropriate to the context, and mindful of duty-of-care responsibilities. Training emphasises restraint, awareness, and accountability alongside physical skills.
Because of its complexity, third-party protection training integrates awareness, decision-making, physical skills, and emotional control. It reflects the reality that protecting others requires clarity under pressure, adaptability, and a strong understanding of priorities.
Ultimately, third-party protection is about putting safety first — not just your own, but someone else’s — and making smart, decisive choices in high-pressure situations.
